Meet Lassie, who is now lovingly known as Lucy, which is short for her full name, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. She has finally come home after living at Austin Pets Alive! for nearly three years. Three seems to be a magic number for her. Lucy was Austin Pets Alive! third longest stay dog. Two other families had tried to adopt Lucy but she was returned. This time, the third time, was the charm.
Lucy is a Plott hound mix who has a penchant for peanut butter and homemade doggie ice cream. I wonder if Lucy would like this recipe for peanut butter doggie ice cream? Let us know if your mom tries it out, Lucy!
Lucy’s parents had lost their previous dog Apollo to advanced hemangiosarcoma in April. The day Apollo passed, they saw Lucy on KXAN’s Pet of the Week. Two days later, the family headed over to APA! to meet some available adoptables. Lucy was the first dog they met. That was it. It was a done deal.
Lucy’s mom is in a wheelchair, but that doesn’t stop the two of them for going for a walk around the neighborhood. She spends the rest of her day watching squirrels in the backyard and trying to monopolize her mom’s attention. She actually grumbles when she doesn’t get enough of it! When her dad gets home, she runs “the crazy out” by playing fetch with him in the yard. After dinner, the two of them take a walk around the neighborhood. And on weekends, they spend some time on the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail.
Lucy or Lassie, however you may know her, is a wonderful example of how well the No Kill philosophy works. It certainly takes an army, a team, a community, a village of people who don’t give up.
